Codex XI·Vortara
Vortara
An old power with a long memory and a specific grievance.
The Largest Island
The largest of the island nations, substantial enough to be almost continental in scale. Old, well-resourced, and convinced that historical loss constitutes present injustice.
Background
Twenty-five years ago a civil war shook Vortara to its foundations. What emerged was harder and more unified than what went in. The war with the Hoffell Isles over the contested island they call Vethara followed from that, a nation that had just survived fracture turned its focus outward.
The war has recently ended. The outcome was not what Vortara expected.
Character
Military and faith are inseparable here. The Red Fellowship, a martial church, is the dominant force in Vortaran life. It raises the army, trains the officers, and shapes the culture. To question the Red Knight in Vortara is not merely a theological disagreement. The monarchy supports the church. In practice, the church holds more real authority.
The culture values discipline, strategy, and patience. Losing is a theological problem as much as a military one.
Capital
Steelgarde
A fortress city on the eastern coast. Every building looks like it was designed by someone who never stopped thinking about defence.
